week sixteen

Well, I've only got 4.4 lbs. to go to meet my Weight Watchers goal... I originally thought it would be the end of June before I met that goal but now I am thinking it may be a bit sooner. Maybe more like the middle of June :~)

Well, I have successfully worked my way up to the longest, most intense workout my treadmill has to offer. It is a 40 minute workout with speeds up to 6 mph and an incline up to 10.

I hit a new low this morning and I'm flirting with the 130s ;~)

sixteenth meeting

The group total last night (with all 6 present and accounted for) was 13.2 lbs. I personally contributed to that with a 1.6 lb. loss. Boosting my grand total to 27 lbs. and the group grand total to 157.9! AMAZING! I received my sixteen week charm last night. It's really cute! It's gold (not REALLY gold - of course) and it is shaped like 2 hands clapping with the 16 embossed on it. I thought it was kind of cool (maybe weird) that I lost 1.6 lb. on the 16th week.

GET CLEARER SKIN

As you know, calcium is good for bones. But it's also great for clearing skin. Calcium-rich foods like skim milk, low-fat cheese, and yogurt can help keep your skin pimple-free. No zits = good times! Posted by Hello
WHITEN YOUR TEETH

We all know that sodas, coffee, tea and sugary foods can stain and discolor teeth. But did you know that certain foods can actually help whiten those suckers up? Crunchy foods like apples and celery help clear stain-causing substances off teeth enamel.  Posted by Hello
GET RID OF PUFFY UNDEREYES

No one wants puffy undereyes. If you've got 'em, up your intake of vitamin C. Vitamin C reduces inflammation and can help send your bags packin'. Bell peppers are great for this since they're super-high in the vitamin. Oranges, spinach and grapefruits are also rich in vitamin C. Posted by Hello
LOOK YOUNGER

Almonds have amazing anti-aging properties. Not only do they contain a lot of Vitamin E (you know, the vitamin that's often listed as an ingredient in anti-wrinkle creams), but it also contains high amounts of fatty acids (which help keep skin plump and supple), as well as the antioxidant selenium. Just be sure not to eat too many of these crunchy beasts. They have great beautifying properties, but they also contain a whole lotta calories. A handful is plenty! Posted by Hello
STRENGTHEN NAILS

Keep nails strong and moisturized by eating lots of protein. Protein is what builds up keratin; the substance nails are made up of. Skinless boneless chicken breast, lean turkey, tuna and beans are all good (and tasty) sources. Posted by Hello
HAVE SHINIER HAIR

Foods rich in vitamin B are fantastic for making dull hair shinier. You can get a lot of "The B" (our affectionate nickname for this vitamin) from eggs, milk, green veggies, and poultry. Silica is also very important for keeping hair elastic, shiny and healthy. Raw oats, cucumber skin, onions and bean sprouts are all major sources of this mineral. Posted by Hello
FIX DRY SKIN

Faced with dry, flaky skin? Have fish for dinner! Fish (especially oily fish like salmon) contains Omega-3 fatty acids, which are great for hydrating and nourishing skin. Posted by Hello

www.dietdirectives.com

I found this interesting site that promises to be able to SHRINK your stomach. I don't know about you but after 4 babies -- that's my problem spot. Here is some of what they say"

1. CHEWING starts digestion. Overweight people don't chew enough so they produce too little saliva. This means that the stomach is forced to overwork. An over-worked stomach stretches.
2. QUANTITY The digestive enzymes in the stomach work best on smaller quantities. When these enzymes are outnumbered, digestion is short-circuited which leads to weight gain.
3. FLUIDS raise blood sugar quickly because they are absorbed first. Fluids and foods have to be compatible in order to shut down hunger.
4. PREDICTABILITY Erratic eating confuses the body and wrecks the metabolism, causing 95% of all calories to be absorbed. Each of us has an inherent ability to absorb fewer calories (only 75%).
5. BALANCED NUTRIENTS The digestive system is at its best if all food groups are consumed equally so that digestive enzymes process nutrients properly.

French Women Don't Get Fat

I'm getting this book today, "French Women Don't Get Fat." Here's a brief review: Most diets don't work. Why? Because the people who follow the diets are dieting. We deprive ourselves of the food we love until we reach a goal. That could take years! Or we eat the foods we love in minute portions, mere tastes. Does one half cup of Godiva's Belgian Dark Chocolate ice cream satisfy anyone? If one chooses to stick with a diet program forever, an almost permanent state of slimness occurs. Voila! Forever is a long time to live with deprivation...to state the obvious. And usually somewhere between resolution and goal, comes the binge. But I won't go there. Almost all of us have experienced this seeming endless cycle of weight management. Dieting is our national obsession! According to Mireille Guiliano's fascinating and sensible book, however, one can moderate and modify behavior and eat sensually - like the French. Bid deprivation adieu. Savor the food you love and loose the fat you hate.  Posted by Hello

I just realized...

that losing 5 pounds when you weigh 170 is much different than losing 5 pounds when you weigh 140. When you weigh 140 it makes a MUCH bigger difference in your body when you lose 5 pounds. It's like a snowball effect. The more you lose, the more impact it has on your overall body shape when you lose more!

week fifteen

I am going to continue to not count my exercise points this week as well. That means on 20 per day which does not leave much if any to play with. On Saturday I will use my 35 bonus points for the week and have a big piece of birthday cake and maybe some ice cream. The birthday cake will be at a family celebration for all the "May" birthdays in the family of which there are many and of which yours truly is one.

Saturday will be an interesting day. At 11:00 a.m. we have a picnic to attend, at 2:00 p.m. the family get-together (a fish fry), and at 6:00 p.m. a going away party for some friends at a friends house. I'm confident that I will do OK though. I have it all planed out. Let's see how I do...

fifteenth meeting

4.4 LBS!!! YES, I lost 4.4 lbs. this week by not counting my exercise points I guess it just gave my body that extra little push to get over the hump! So far I've lost 25.4 lbs. My 5th 5 lbs.! The group total was 12 lbs. that is with 2 unaccounted for and 1 extra (1 of the originals) that is still doing the program but not attending meetings. The group grand total for 14 weeks is 144.7 -- that's like a WHOLE person!

calorie counters

There are so many GREAT sites on the web for calorie counters. When you want the best, most accurate nutritional information, go straight to the source, and visit official web sites of food companies or fast food restaurants. They usually have the most reliable info. If you're a little lazier and like to go to one source to get lots of information, there are two sites I recommend. One is calorieking.com. They each have nutritionals on thousands of foods -- including name brands, pre-packaged foods, and restaurants. They're both awesome! And in case you don't already know about this one, there's an incredible comprehensive resource called "Dotti's Weight Loss Zone" that has a restaurant database containing fairly accurate point counts for foods from almost every restaurant chain known to man (it even includes places like Costco and 7-Eleven). It's fantastic if you follow Weight Watchers.

Weight Watchers: a winner!

I’ve told you this all along, but now Consumer Reports has determined that Weight Watchers is the best overall diet plan. Their ratings were based on number of pounds lost, nutrition, how easy the diet was to follow and dropout rates. The easy-to-follow points system, plus weekly group support and long term success rates of followers were the major reasons Weight Watchers scored high marks.

a reminder about iron...

Feeling tired and sluggish? Finding it hard to muster up the energy to work out? Maybe you're not getting enough iron. Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency in the world, and it's one of the leading causes of anemia. Wondering where to get some iron? Eggs, lean meats (beef, pork, lamb, poultry or fish), beans, peas, leafy vegetables, beets, baked potatoes with skin, watermelon, and raisins are all great sources! Tip: For maximum iron absorption, eat iron-rich and Vitamin C-packed foods at the same time!

interesting article

Several people that know I have joined Weight Watchers told me this week of a news report on FOX News that rated Weight Watchers as the BEST diet plan to follow - I still say it's a lifestyle change, a way of eating healthy - not a diet. But, anyway... here's the article they referred to:

Weight Watchers, Slim-Fast Top Diets
Tuesday, May 10, 2005

Meetings and shakes trump counting carbs when it comes to long-term weight loss, according to a recent analysis of diets by Consumer Reports magazine.

The publication, best known for rating cars and electronics, put Weight Watchers, with its support group meetings, and Slim-Fast, whose shakes let you opt out of cooking, at the top of the heap.

The ratings were based on pounds lost, nutrition, how easy the diet was to follow and dropout rates after six months and a year.

Though low-carb diets have dominated headlines, the highest marks went to Weight Watchers, which uses weekly meetings to reinforce its decidedly simple philosophy — eat less and exercise more. After a year, its followers were far more likely to stick with the plan.

Weight Watchers did not, however, earn the strongest scores on weight loss, a distinction that went to second-ranked Slim-Fast, which replaces parts of two meals a day with shakes and bars.

Atkins, which has led the low-carb charge, got good scores for short-term weight loss, but landed at the bottom of the ratings because of poor marks on retention and nutrition.

CHEW ON THIS:

Salsa is low in calories, fat and cholesterol, making it the ultimate guilt free condiment to use in place of salad dressing, sour cream or even cream cheese. Yum! Try it on your baked potato.

Salsa Fact #234 - Salsa has become the best-selling condiment in North America, knocking ketchup out of the top spot. Go salsa!

week fourteen

I'm going to have to shake some things up this week to force my body to respond and get over this hump (the brick wall I've hit). I only have 10 more lbs. to go. I'm not discouraged or surprised that I gained .4 last week instead of losing. I didn't do anything different. I didn't eat anything I wasn't supposed to or stop exercising or anything like that. It just happens and I feel that I was as mentally prepared for it and expecting it as I could be.

My plan of attack? I will this week not eat my exercise points and see if that gives my body the extra boost to get over the hump. That means 20 points a day and no more.

Let's see what happens...

My daughter and I ran a 5K race on Saturday. She won 1st place in her age category! I took 5 whole minutes off my time from the 5K we ran last month. Next month, I will run a 5K with my son - his first.

fourteenth meeting

Well, I knew it would happen. I've hit the wall. This week, for the first time in fourteen weeks, I GAINED .4 lb. The rest of the group did amazingly well though. Remember, I told you last week that we added 2 new members, and with their help the group lost a total of 15.2 lbs. this week bringing our grand total to a whopping 132.7 lbs.! Sorry I was no help gals ;~0 I'll try to do better next week.

increasing your metabolism

When it comes to weight loss, it's all about calories. Burning more calories than the body takes in results in weight loss and taking in more calories than are burned means a weight gain.

Metabolism is the number of calories the body burns and is made up of three components: resting metabolic rate, physical activity and a small amount needed for food digestion. Increasing the body's metabolism has the potential to enhance weight management because the number of calories needed each day would be higher (and so the amount of food needed to fuel that need would be greater).

While many popular publications would lead you to believe otherwise, metabolism can only be boosted in two ways: increasing the body's muscle mass and increasing the body's heart rate.

Muscle Mass
Losing some muscle mass is considered to be an expected part of weight loss because a smaller body needs less muscle to move the body's weight around. Resistance (i.e., weight) training as part of a comprehensive exercise plan can increase lean muscle mass in weight-stable individuals and minimize loss of lean tissue during weight loss. While a few studies have demonstrated otherwise, most studies show that it is not feasible to decrease body weight and simultaneously increase lean muscle tissue. A popular theory concerning weight loss, increased metabolism and exercise states that it is feasible to create a sustained increase in metabolism through regular aerobic workouts. The studies that have evaluated this theory for scientific merit have shown very mixed results. The general finding for studies done in humans is that, if this phenomenon exists, the impact on overall metabolism is very small. Further, there are no studies that have directly linked the "after effects" of exercise with significant weight loss.

Heart Rate's Impact
A person's heart rate has an impact on metabolism – the higher the heart rate, the more calories burned. Stimulants, whether from a prescribed medication, dietary supplement, or a caffeine-containing beverage, all work to increase the heart rate and fire up the nervous system. In a controlled study that looked at giving stimulants, including amphetamines or a placebo, weight loss was greater with the stimulant because heart rate and blood pressure were raised and food intake was decreased as a side effect of being "hyper." Most dietary supplements and herbal compounds that are sold over the counter to promote weight loss contain stimulants, though at a lesser strength than that found in amphetamines. These products are often marketed as having "fat burning" properties, which are achieved because they increase heart rate and blood pressure and decrease appetite. They can work, but they do so at a cost to the body. Negative side effects include insomnia, nervousness, anxiety and, in extreme cases, death.
Increasingly, some of these products (including the ones that were most effective, like fen-phen and ephedra) have been banned because of their negative side effects.

week thirteen

I feel really, really great and am so encouraged that I haven't hit some sort of plateau yet. I am trying to keep myself mentally prepared for the inevitable plateau. I'm sure it will happen at some points, probably the last 5 lbs.

I spent 2+ hours Saturday moving one college aged child from the 3rd floor of one dorm to the 1st floor of another (which incidentally, you have to climb 2 sets of stairs to get to) and another college aged child from the 2nd floor dorm to home. OH my aching calves! There must be some muscles there that you don't use to run or walk. It's make it difficult to keep up my running but so far I have. I have to race this Saturday!

Thursday, May 05, 2005

thirteenth meeting

Well, I lost 1.6 lbs. this week! That's my 4th 5 lbs. for a total so far of 21.4 lbs. I have 10 to go. We had 2 new friends join us - that's exciting! The group total lost 3.2 with 1 unaccounted for.

CHEW ON THIS:

May is National Salsa Month. Salsa is one of the world's BEST condiments. It's healthy, low in calories & fat and tastes GREAT on salads & sandwiches! I had it on a baked potato this week instead of the usual butter and sour cream and it was TERRIFIC!
